Restoring the batisse

When we first walked into La Batisse the roof was partly fallen in, and a wild fig tree had grown through the kitchen. Four years later it’s the home we dreamed of, for ourselves, and for guests.

What we kept

• The original beams
• The wooden shutters
• The dry-stone garden walls

What we added

• A properly insulated roof
• Underfloor heating on the ground floor
• A kitchen built to seat eight without crowding
